Calzaghe: “I Wouldn’t Call Canelo the Greatest of All Time”

Joe Calzaghe / Association Press

Former world champion Joe Calzaghe explained why he does not consider Saul “Canelo” Alvarez the greatest boxer of all time.

To be honest, I wouldn’t call him the greatest ever. Because he’s lost his biggest fights.

That said, he’s still a great fighter. Considering the fights he’s had and the opponents he has beaten. He’s had magnificent wins, but against truly elite fighters — he lost, didn’t he?

He lost to Mayweather. I think he lost to Golovkin. Listen, Canelo’s had a great career, man. When you keep getting back in the ring over and over — you take losses. Time catches up with everyone. I just hope he doesn’t stay around too long and end up losing to some mediocre fighter,” Calzaghe said.

Joe Calzaghe retired undefeated with a record of 46-0, 32 KOs. His final fight took place in 2008 — a unanimous-decision win over Roy Jones Jr.
