American coach Stephen Edwards has confirmed that he is no longer working with 33-year-old super middleweight contender Caleb Plant. Edwards did not give a direct explanation for the split, but hinted that he was dissatisfied with how the training camp for the fight with Jose Armando Resendiz was handled.
“I will no longer be training Caleb, so I don’t really know what’s next. I’ve heard things about his future fights, but I don’t know what’s going on there. I just won’t be training him anymore.
I don’t really understand what direction he wants to go in, but about three or four weeks after the fight, I told him I was stepping away. We didn’t really discuss it much, but I keep hearing questions about a Charlo fight and other possibilities. I simply gave him my decision — that was back in June.
I want to say I hold Caleb with love — this is not a conflict at all. He doesn’t owe me anything, we don’t have problems. Sometimes relationships just run their course — that’s all. I respect him, so I would never let him get into a fight and then suddenly tell him I won’t be there.
I wouldn’t do that to him. So three or four weeks after the Resendiz fight — I think that was May 31 — by late June I told Caleb, wished him well, thanked him for our time together, and said I wouldn’t return to the job.
As for the last camp, it was just… different, and that’s all I can say. Nothing bad — I’m not angry or disappointed. Maybe just a little puzzled as to why things didn’t go the way they usually do. But that’s life — we move on.” said Edwards.
The bout between Caleb Plant (23-3, 14 KO) and Jose Armando Resendiz (16-2, 11 KO) took place on May 31 and ended with Resendiz winning by split decision.
