The International Boxing Federation (IBF) is rolling out the red carpet for a heavyweight showdown. They've set the stage for a title fight between Mairis Briedis and Gilberto Ramirez for the vacant heavyweight championship (up to 90.7 kg). Mark your calendars: the promoter bidding kicks off on Jan. 16.
Here's the deal: any fighter playing hardball by skipping the bidding or thumbing their nose at the results gets a penalty. They'll drop in the federation's rankings faster than a boxer on the canvas and face a 6-month timeout from IBF fights.
Rewind to Dec. 23 in Saudi Arabia. The heavyweight belt was left hanging when the IBF threw a curveball, not letting Jai Opetaia defend his title voluntarily against Ellis Zorro. Opetaia, however, didn't break a sweat, nailing that fight with a first-round knockout.
Remember back in July 2022? That's when Jay clinched victory over Briedis by the judges' decision, snatching the championship belt. Now, with the title up for grabs, it's Briedis and Ramirez's turn to dance under the spotlight. Who'll be the last man standing? Stay tuned!
