Bob Arum, founder and CEO of Top Rank, has expressed concern over the potential return of Manny Pacquiao (62-8-2, 39 KOs), who is reportedly preparing for a fight against WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios (29-2-1, 18 KOs).
“I can’t say anything bad — Manny meant a great deal to us and to our company,” Arum told reporters.
“But it seems questionable that, at his age, he’s ready to take that kind of risk by stepping into the ring with a reigning world champion.
Even George Foreman was younger when he beat Michael Moorer — and George had stayed active for years leading up to that fight. Manny, by contrast, has barely been active at all.”
Still, Arum acknowledged Pacquiao’s legendary grit:
“Manny Pacquiao is an incredible man. And if anyone could pull something like this off, it’s him.
But I really am concerned — given his age and long layoff. Still, I’ll be rooting for him without question. He’s a wonderful human being, and he meant a great deal to us as a company.”
According to early reports, the bout between Pacquiao and Barrios is targeted for July 19 in Las Vegas, USA.
The 46-year-old Filipino icon recently arrived in Los Angeles with longtime trainer Freddie Roach to begin preparations.
