Benavidez Will Return to Super Middleweight on One Condition

WBC interim light heavyweight (up to 79.4 kg) title contender David Benavidez (28-0, 24 KOs) said he will no longer fight in the super middleweight category (up to 76.2 kg), where he was recently the WBC interim champion. He may drop weight again for just one opponent.

"It's my right to follow these titles. I just think it's unfair that the WBC gives me only 10 days to decide if I'm going to fight at light heavyweight or super middleweight.

I mean, I haven't had an opportunity in three years, but we'll make a decision after the fight. But, certainly, if we can make the fight with Canelo happen – that's the fight we all want to see.

I don't want to talk about Berlanga too much. I don't really have an opinion. Berlanga feels he deserves a fight with Canelo, but the fans know who really deserves that fight, and I'll leave that to the fans. Ask the fans what fight they want to see, and they'll tell you.

I'm not fooling anyone. Now that we're in the light heavyweight division, I see that potentially we could have a fight with David Morrell. The only fight for which I stay in super middleweight is the fight with Canelo.

I'm done with super middleweight. If it's not Canelo, I'm not going down there. I've been there for 10 years. I was already at the top, trying to fight for all the belts, but they didn't give me the opportunity, and now we'll move up to light heavyweight.

But this is a very profitable fight – me and David Morrell. He's the best in PBC; let's do it," said Benavidez.

In his next fight, Benavidez will face Oleksandr Gvozdyk. The fight will take place on June 15 on the undercard of Gervonta Davis vs. Frank Martin.
