José Benavidez Sr., father and trainer of WBC light heavyweight champion David Benavidez (30-0, 24 KOs), has taken aim at Saul “Canelo” Álvarez (62-2-2, 39 KOs) for planning fights against William Scull (23-0, 9 KOs) and Terence Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs).
“Scull? What the hell has he ever accomplished? Who is Scull, anyway? I didn’t even know who that guy was. Terence Crawford? He looked awful in his last fight [against Israil Madrimov – ed.]. He’s moving up two weight classes? Come on, man. We were considering going up to heavyweight to face Usyk, but David’s not ready for that yet. And I don’t think Crawford is either.
I see two easy wins lined up for Canelo in 2025, and that’s exactly what they’re after. People are letting this happen, and so are the sanctioning bodies. So why wouldn’t he keep doing it? Like he says himself, he can do whatever he wants — and he really is doing just that.
It’s a complete circus, and Canelo’s running the show. Good for him. The promoters are letting it happen. It doesn’t matter what the public says — they’re going to go ahead with their plans anyway,” said Benavidez Sr. in an interview with Fight Hub TV.
Canelo’s bout with William Scull is set for May 3 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The fight will be for the undisputed super middleweight championship (76.2 kg). If Álvarez wins, a September showdown with Terence Crawford is on the table.
