WBC interim super middleweight champion (up to 76.2 kg) David Benavidez (28-0, 24 KOs) commented on his upcoming fight in the light heavyweight division (up to 79.4 kg) against Oleksandr Gvozdyk (20-1, 16 KOs).
«I’m excited to move up to light heavyweight. I’ve been heading towards this weight class for a long time. The only reason I didn’t do it earlier was that I was waiting for a fight with Canelo Alvarez.
Since that fight isn’t happening, this is the perfect time to move up and test myself. Oleksandr Gvozdyk is a very good fighter. He was an excellent world champion and defeated one of the greatest light heavyweight champions of all time, Adonis Stevenson. He only has one loss, to Beterbiev.
I’m preparing for the best version of Oleksandr Gvozdyk that there can be. By training this way, I’ll be ready for anything that comes my way. It definitely gives me an advantage. I sparred with him when I was 22 years old. But time has passed. He’s gotten older, and I’ve gotten better. I’m in my prime right now,» said Benavidez.
The fight between David Benavidez and Oleksandr Gvozdyk will take place on June 15. The interim WBC light heavyweight title will be on the line.
