WBC interim and WBA "regular" light heavyweight champion David Benavidez isn’t ruling out a rematch with Cuban fighter David Morrell.
"The fight was definitely personal. You could see it even after we battled. It’s a good thing when fights get personal because it means two men who don’t like each other are going to war.
Morrell was known as a fighter who moved a lot around the ring, yet against me, he barely used the ring at all. He went toe-to-toe with me. I kept my word and matched him step for step. I’m happy with how we both performed.
I even tried to stay humble after the fight—I gave Morrell his belt back because it’s a meaningful keepsake for him. I wanted to show sportsmanship. There’s no need for bad blood after a fight.
Respect should be given when it’s earned. No more hate—unless we fight again. If he racks up more wins, a rematch is a real possibility. We’re both young, so we can definitely run it back. I’d love to fight him again. I already proved I’m the better fighter. He will never be able to beat me," Benavidez stated.
Benavidez defeated Morrell by unanimous decision and is now in line to face the winner of the Dmitry Bivol vs. Artur Beterbiev rematch.
