Benavidez Chooses Weight Class to Continue Career

Newly crowned interim WBC champion in two weight classes, David Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs), commented on his victory over Oleksandr Gvozdyk (20-2, 16 KOs) and stated that he would like to return to super middleweight (up to 76.2 kg) and face the division’s undisputed champion, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 KOs).

"Honestly, I think my performance was a 7 out of 10. Oleksandr is a great fighter. It's no surprise he’s a former champion, a former Olympian.

We are still aiming to move down to the super middleweight division to fight for the title. If we get Canelo or if they vacate the title, I would love to win it again," Benavidez said.

On the night of June 16, David Benavidez won by unanimous decision against Oleksandr Gvozdyk to become the interim WBC champion in both the light heavyweight (up to 79.4 kg) and super middleweight divisions.

The WBC will give David 10 days to decide which division he will continue his career in.
