In an interview with BoxingScene, David Benavides' (28-0, 24 KOs) father and coach, José Benavides, stated that they are ready to accept a rehydration clause for the bout against the undisputed super middleweight champion, Saúl "Canelo" Álvarez (60-2-2, 39 KOs).
"It seems to me that they (Team Álvarez) thought we would ask for more money, so they could have an excuse. We know Canelo doesn't want to face the Mexican monster. He doesn’t desire this fight. Looking for any excuse. He's scared. Knows he can't win. He's afraid to face David. They could offer him $200 million, but he'll find some other reasons. He's waiting for a big paycheck. We just want the chance to step into the ring and fight him. He wants $200 million, and that's ridiculous.
We see a great champion, dedicated to his sport, having done everything in boxing, fading away. I guess it's the end of Canelo Álvarez. He knows that a young lion and warrior like David can hurt him, stop him, and send him into retirement. If he's such a great fighter, let him come and shut us up. Right now, he's just creating a bad image for himself.
We're ready to do everything to make the fight happen. The fight can be made easy, so Canelo can earn his check. Maybe next time we try to fight, I'll give him a dozen roses along with the fight invitation," said Benavides Sr.
Benavides' next fight is scheduled for the summer against Oleksandr Gvozdyk (20-1, 16 KOs) for the WBC "interim" light heavyweight title (up to 175 lbs). Canelo is set to fight on May 4th against Jaime Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs).
