Benavides's Father Explains Why His Son Moved to Light Heavyweight

Jose Benavides, the father and trainer of "interim" WBC champion in the super middleweight division (up to 76.2 kg) David Benavides (28-0, 24 KOs), says they are planning a bout against the upcoming absolute champion in the light heavyweight division (up to 79.4 kg).

"We moved up to the light heavyweight division to leave Canelo behind. We should stay busy. We're eyeing the winner of the bout between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol, but we're also ready to return to the super middleweight division if needed.

We want to get the opportunity to fight Canelo and prove that David is the best. Only when he does his job, the money will come. We want to make history and give the fans exciting fights. We're patient. I don't think the fight with Canelo will happen, but I'm optimistic," said Benavides Sr.

Benavides and Gvozdyk will meet in the summer for the interim WBC champion title in the light heavyweight division. This will be David's debut in the new weight class. The likely date is June 15th.

Beterbiev and Bivol will have their bout in Saudi Arabia. The preliminary showdown is scheduled for June 1st.
