Former world champion Austin Trout (37-5-1, 18 KOs) outlined potential next opponents for WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight titleholder Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez (62-2-2, 39 KOs).
“Canelo’s career has been very successful. I’m glad that the fight with Edgar Berlanga brought him good numbers.
Respect to the king. He can do whatever he wants now. As a fan, I would love to see a fight between Canelo and David Benavidez. That’s a fight that needs to happen, and I’m sure he’ll make it. When hasn’t he fought someone everyone wanted him to fight?
I used to be convinced that Benavidez could beat Álvarez, but after his last fight against Oleksandr Gvozdyk, I’m no longer sure. Maybe he should have another fight at light heavyweight to showcase his skills, and then we can hype it up again. Right now, I’m leaning towards Canelo. Although everyone has off nights.
Canelo has looked better and better since his fight with Dmitry Bivol. But I think Bivol will beat him in the rematch. Bivol outsmarted and outboxed him in the first fight.
A fight against Terence Crawford is a more even matchup for Canelo than against Benavidez. Crawford is strong, smart, and crafty. He has steel balls, brother. This is a fight where Canelo loses everything even if he wins. I don’t think that’s a smart choice for him. If you win, you lose; if you lose, you really lose,” Trout said.
The 39-year-old American faced Canelo in April 2013, following Álvarez’s victory over Miguel Cotto. The fight ended with a unanimous decision win for Álvarez.
