In an interview with ProBox TV, commentator Teddy Atlas expressed doubts that WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson (21-0, 10 KOs) would agree to a unification fight with WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis (29-0, 27 KOs).
"If he had the chance to fight Davis? Would he take it or wait for a more lucrative fight with Emanuel Navarrete? Is he what we want to see? Does he want to show himself? Are we 100% sure? Sooner or later, life will give us all the answers. But what do we know now? It was the same with Floyd Mayweather. He was an excellent defensive fighter with fast hands. But he proved he wanted all those big fights. There were others – Pernell Whitaker, Sugar Ray Leonard. They all wanted those fights. The question is, does he have that in him? Would he really go through all the obstacles? I personally have questions…," Atlas said. Shakur Stevenson's last fight was in November of the previous year against Edwin De Los Santos (16-2, 14 KOs), winning by unanimous decision. Gervonta Davis, in April 2023, won by knockout against Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs), handing his opponent the first defeat of his career.
