American promoter and head of Top Rank, Bob Arum, discussed under what condition the current WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury (34-0-1, 24 KOs) could meet Anthony Joshua (28-3, 25 KOs) in 2024, despite a potential rematch clause with the WBA, WBO, IBO, and IBF heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk (21-0, 14 KOs).
"There's always a chance when there's an organization that's putting money in, like in this case with the sovereign fund, the entertainment division in Saudi Arabia, they can have a huge influence on the fighters, and maybe if Fury is successful, they can make it so Usyk steps aside to allow the fight with Joshua to happen this year. The Saudis, having all this money that can dictate the venue, are very smart, and I think they would want nothing more than to stage the fight at Wembley with 95,000 spectators under their promotion. I think it would do more for the image than a Fury and Joshua fight in Saudi Arabia. But it's up to them. This is what I feel when I briefly talk to them about the future. Let's not get ahead of ourselves. May 18th is an extremely competitive championship confrontation in heavyweight. I hope Tyson, who will appear on May 18th, is not the same Tyson who fought Ngannou, and I truly believe, from the messages I'm getting, that he has taken himself in hand and is training very, very carefully for this. I can't wait to see this fight," said Arum.
On May 18th in Saudi Arabia, Usyk and Fury will have the first heavyweight absolute championship bout since 1999. In case of defeat, the losing party has the right to activate a clause for an immediate rematch.
