Former heavyweight world champion Anthony Joshua, 35, has been offered a bout in Nigeria at the start of 2026, with Martin Bakole named among the possible opponents.
The news was revealed by Ezekiel Adamu, CEO of the promoting company behind the proposal.
“We’ve already held initial talks and will continue the discussions. We’re looking at the first quarter of next year. Everyone knows AJ has repeatedly spoken about his desire to fight in Africa before retiring, and we believe Nigeria is the perfect story for that.
Nigeria has the largest population on the continent — around 250 million people. It’s the economic capital of Africa, and the list of advantages goes on. We’re ready to make this happen.
Bakole? Yes, he’s among the candidates. We’ve received many possible names for this fight and are reviewing all options. We’re confident we can organize something truly spectacular — an event that will capture global attention and give Africa, especially Nigeria, a great boxing celebration,” said Adamu.
Anthony Joshua (28-4, 25 KOs) last fought in September 2024, when he was knocked out in the fifth round by Daniel Dubois.
In May, Martin Bakole (21-2-1, 16 KOs) fought Efe Ajagba to a majority draw.
