Former two-division world champion Andre Ward shared his thoughts on who should be considered the face of modern boxing. According to the American boxer, three names stand out: WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis (30-0, 28 KOs), super middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Álvarez (61-2-2, 39 KOs), and newly crowned WBA light middleweight champion Terence Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs).
“It’s hard to name just one fighter as the face of boxing because that role usually belongs to an extraordinary personality. Floyd was the face of boxing in his time, and many still think he is today.
It’s not easy because fighters only step into the ring 1-2 times a year. When you’re inactive for 10 months, who keeps interest in the sport alive? Each fighter has their own level of popularity, but these athletes also contribute significantly.
In my view, right now, it’s Gervonta Davis. You can’t ignore what he’s accomplished. You can’t deny his influence and his performances. At the same time, you can’t overlook how Canelo Álvarez has long been the face of boxing.
When I think of the face of boxing, I think of Canelo, Gervonta Davis, and Terence Crawford. I believe that the face of boxing right now is among them,” said Ward.
Gervonta Davis last fought against Frank Martin (18-1, 12 KOs), winning by an eighth-round knockout.
Canelo Álvarez secured a unanimous decision victory against Jaime Munguia (43-1, 34 KOs) in May, and his next fight is scheduled against Edgar Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs) on September 14 in Las Vegas, USA.
On August 3, Terence Crawford debuted in a new weight division, capturing the WBA title by defeating Israil Madrimov (10-1-1, 7 KOs) by unanimous decision.
