Algieri: "If Ryan Lost to Haney, He Would Be Reduced to Youtuber Fights"

Former world champion Chris Algieri commented on the positive drug test of junior welterweight (up to 63.5 kg) Ryan Garcia (25-1, 20 KOs).

"If Ryan had lost to Haney, he would have been reduced to YouTuber fights. But he wins, upsets, and becomes the face of the sport, having a legitimate chance to be the overall face in the coming months or years.

And then this surfaces... Boxing never misses an opportunity to blacken its eye. This is two black eyes, a bloody nose, and a broken jaw. It's just a bad look for the sport because this kid got so much attention. Now this. He doesn't stay out of the news, good or bad. It's very unfortunate," said Algieri.

On May 2nd, it was revealed that Ryan Garcia failed a drug test taken before his fight against WBC junior welterweight champion Devin Haney (31-1, 15 KOs). The fight took place on the night of April 21st, where Garcia defeated Haney. Despite the loss, Devin remains the WBC champion as Ryan didn't make weight and didn't contend for the title.
