After Crawford: Barrios – Full WBC Champion

The Board of Directors of the World Boxing Council (WBC) has voted to elevate interim welterweight champion (up to 66.7 kg) Mario Barrios (29-2, 18 KOs) to the status of full champion.

This decision came after the WBC designated Terence Crawford as a "Champion in Recess." Crawford, the former undisputed champion, held this title but decided to move up to super welterweight (up to 69.85 kg) to fight Israil Madrimov (10-0-1, 7 KOs).

If Crawford returns to the welterweight division, he will have the opportunity to challenge the current champion first due to his new status. However, the decision on which weight class Terence will continue to compete in will be made after his fight with Madrimov. They are set to meet on August 3 in Los Angeles, USA. The bout will be for Madrimov's WBA title, the interim WBO championship, and the status of mandatory challenger for the WBC belt.

In May, Mario Barrios defended his interim championship by unanimous decision against Fabian Andres Maidana (22-3, 16 KOs) and is currently without an official opponent.
