Egis Klimas, the manager of former world champion in three weight categories Vasyl Lomachenko (16-2, 11 KOs), talked about the Ukrainian's plans for 2023.
"Lomachenko plans to fight for the title of absolute champion. Vasyl is the mandatory WBO contender, but Haney and Kambosos activated the rematch option. It's a big fight and we didn't want to force a mandatory defense of the WBO belt. We let Haini fight Kambosos, and Vasyl is next in line."
“It seems that both guys agree and want to fight Vasyl after their rematch on October 15. They will hold a rematch, and the winner is targeted for a fight with Lomachenko. We will be ready for it. March, April - somewhere in this period of time."
As a reminder, the Ukrainian boxer will return to the ring on October 29. The fight between Lomachenko and Jemaine Ortiz will take place at the Hulu Theater in Madison Square Garden in New York.
Lomachenko fought his last fight last December, defeating Richard Commey by unanimous decision. Subsequently, Vasyl could have held a match with George Kambosos, but refused it against the background of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.
