WBC Announces Haney as "Champion in Recess"

The World Boxing Council (WBC) announced that WBC super lightweight (up to 63.5 kg) world champion Devin Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) requested the status of "champion in recess." The WBC Board of Directors unanimously granted Haney's request.

At the same time, the Board of Directors elevated the current "interim" world champion Alberto Puello (23-0, 10 KOs) to full WBC super lightweight champion status.

It’s worth noting that Haney's previous fight was declared a no contest due to his opponent, Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs), failing a doping test and consequently being disqualified. Following this, Haney announced he would take a one-year hiatus.

Alberto Puello last fought on June 15 against Gary Antuanne Russell (17-1, 17 KOs) and won by split decision.
