20-year-old Mexican boxer Josué David Hernández was killed in his home in San Luis Potosí.
Hernández was at home with his four sisters when an intruder broke in and attacked one of them. Josué stepped in to protect his sister. During the struggle, the attacker struck him with a machete. The 20-year-old athlete died at the scene before emergency services arrived, and the killer managed to escape. The suspect remains at large.
Hernández was seen as a future star of Mexican boxing. He began boxing at 15 and won several amateur tournaments. Josué also worked as a sparring partner for elite professional fighters. He was preparing for his professional debut, scheduled for early next year.
His coach, Titán Rodríguez, a former world title challenger at super flyweight, commented on his student’s death:
“Today I woke up to devastating and painful news that you’re no longer here. My friend, my brother, my running partner. So many dreams still left to accomplish. So many conversations, and all the trust we had in each other to achieve everything. A piece of my heart goes with you.
Only God knows why things like this happen. Your departure hurts me deeply, and I will work unbelievably hard to reach all the goals we set together. I love you so much, Josué David Hernández. May God receive you in His holy kingdom. It’s time to shine in heaven, my king,” Rodríguez wrote.
The investigation into Hernández’s death is ongoing.
