Insider Claims Canelo–Crawford Contract Included No Rematch Clause

Boxing insider Dan Rafael revealed whether there was a mandatory rematch clause in the contract between Saul “Canelo” Álvarez and Terence Crawford following their first fight.

– There had been talk about a potential rematch between Crawford and Canelo, but was it, as far as you know, written into the contract, or is it something Canelo might have as an option? These kinds of contracts are often signed, and we know they generate a lot of money — but are people really interested in investing huge sums into that?

– I was told by Canelo’s team that there was no rematch clause in the contract. However, Canelo still has two fights remaining under his deal with Turki Alalshikh. So, if Turki says, ‘I want to make the rematch,’ they could certainly do it. But there’s nothing Canelo can point to and say, ‘I’m automatically entitled to a rematch with Terence Crawford,’ like in many other major fights. Sometimes such a clause simply doesn’t exist.

When Tyson Fury fought Oleksandr Usyk, their agreement covered two fights regardless of the outcome of the first. The same situation applied to Conor Benn and Chris Eubank Jr. — their deal also included two bouts, with the second being automatic no matter the result of the first.

There have been many other fights where boxers had an automatic rematch option. Gervonta Davis had one with Lamont Roach after their draw but later declined it. In the case of Canelo and Crawford, as far as I understand, there’s no clause guaranteeing Álvarez an automatic rematch,” Rafael explained.

Terence Crawford (42-0, 31 KOs) defeated Saul Álvarez (63-3-2, 39 KOs) by unanimous decision, becoming the undisputed super middleweight champion — and the first boxer ever to achieve undisputed status in three different weight divisions.
