Detailed Fight Review
On paper, Julian Williams is the perfect test for Yoenis Tellez. It seems that PBC wants to gauge their 24-year-old Cuban prospect and raise his stock with an impressive victory.
Williams is a methodical fighter who presses forward behind a measured jab and does his best work at mid-range.
However, Tellez is simply better in every department—he’s faster, sharper, more explosive, and hits harder.
At 24 years old, Tellez is a full decade younger than Williams.
Williams, however, has far more experience at the top level, having faced elite opponents such as: Carlos Adames, Jeison Rosario, Jarrett Hurd, Ishe Smith, Joshua Conley, Jermall Charlo. Three of those fights ended in losses for Williams, which raises doubts about his ability to handle a younger, fresher, and more explosive opponent like Tellez.
For Tellez, this is his first truly serious test at the professional level.
Neither fighter is known for high punch volume.
Both prefer to draw their opponents in and land powerful counters. Tellez throws slightly more and is more fluid when chaining together combinations.
Williams has fought only once per year since 2018.
Meanwhile, Tellez fought twice in 2023 and was far more active in 2022, stepping into the ring four times.
Both fighters have solid power, but Tellez is more explosive.
His speed and timing allow him to land more effectively. When he hurts an opponent, he finishes them efficiently.
Williams has shown vulnerability to knockouts—three of his four career losses came inside the distance.
While Tellez has yet to face someone at Williams’ level, his defensive awareness has made him difficult to hit cleanly so far.
Williams has never lost in Brooklyn, holding both a stoppage win and a decision victory at the venue.
Tellez, on the other hand, has never fought in Brooklyn.
This is a classic "experienced fighter vs. rising prospect" matchup.
If Tellez wins, he takes a major step up and adds his first big name to his record. If Williams wins, he stays relevant for bigger fights a little longer. However, at this stage, it’s hard to make a strong case for Williams beyond experience.
Williams’ experience is his biggest weapon, but the stylistic edge, speed, and explosiveness all favor Tellez. If Tellez fights smart and doesn’t allow Williams to settle into a rhythm, this could be his breakout performance.
