WBA and WBO heavyweight champion Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez has revealed that he underwent shoulder surgery to deal with a long‑standing injury.
“After getting three medical opinions and thinking it over, I chose to have shoulder surgery. I picked up this injury in my last fight, and ignoring it any longer made no sense—for my health or my career.
Surgery is the last word any boxer wants to hear, but it’s the right move to heal fully and return at 100 percent. I’ll stay out of the ring until the medical team clears me, but my focus is already on rehab and the road back.
Thank you to everyone who supports and worries about me—it means a lot. I’ll come back stronger, sharper, and hungrier for victory than ever!” Ramirez wrote.
The champion’s promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, founder and head of Golden Boy Promotions, also addressed the injury:
“We wish Zurdo Ramirez a speedy recovery and are glad to hear the shoulder surgery went well. At Golden Boy, the health and safety of our fighters is our top priority.
We look forward to seeing Zurdo fully healed, operating at 115 percent, and ready for the biggest challenges awaiting him when he returns to the ring,” the statement read.
Gilberto Ramirez (48‑1, 30 KOs) last fought on 28 June, defeating Yuniel Dorticos by unanimous decision to retain his titles.
