Oleksandr Krassyuk, the former promoter of undisputed heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk, shared his thoughts on a potential fight between the Ukrainian and interim WBO titleholder Fabio Wardley.
“I’ll make my position clear publicly. I want Usyk to retire as soon as possible. I was even against his fight with Dubois. But fine — that one made sense because it gave him a chance to become a three-time undisputed world champion.
Now tell me just one reason — not two, not three — one reason why Usyk should fight Wardley. With all due respect to the guy, from Usyk’s point of view, it makes no sense.
Even money isn’t an argument here, because there’s no big money in this fight. Unless some magician drops 50 million from a helicopter — then it would make sense. Otherwise, why risk everything he’s achieved over the past 13 years? He’s a three-time undisputed world champion. If he loses, people will only remember the defeat. Lennox Lewis is the best example. There’s a saying: ‘Better to leave an hour early than two minutes late.’
That’s why I agree with many who think strategically — Usyk’s status as an undefeated, undisputed champion will stay with him forever, and he’ll retire a boxing legend,” said Krassyuk.
