American insider Dan Rafael spoke about the stage of negotiations between the teams of Vergil Ortiz and Jaron Ennis. Previously, after Ortiz's victory over Erickson Lubin, both boxers agreed to meet in the next bout.
“The problem is that on one side here are the Golden Boy bosses — Oscar De La Hoya and Eric Gomez. On the other — Ortiz’s manager Rick Mirigian.
The problem in organizing the duel lies purely in the relationship between Eric and Oscar with Rick. And they are waging a bloody war in the offices for the money for this fight. If they cannot agree, the fight will not happen. Rick has taken a ‘scorched earth’ position, and Oscar and Eric are not going to yield. They are fighting amongst themselves like cats and dogs. I hope this is just the process and they will eventually come together and see it through to the end.
I know them all very well. They are professionals in their field, but at the same time very stubborn people. And sometimes this gets in the way of actually closing a deal. But, you know, Rick is doing his job as Vergil Ortiz’s manager, fighting for every dollar for a fight that everyone calls huge. And Eric, Oscar, and DAZN are fighting to ensure the amount is, in their opinion, consistent with their expectations from a potential PPV, as well as a way to attract people to buy the new improved DAZN subscription tier.
So we’ll see. Maybe they will knock their heads together enough and finally come to an agreement. But, as for me, it could go either way,” said Rafael.
Previously it was reported that representatives of the boxers held meetings and came to a preliminary agreement.
