First Statement from Hatton’s Family and Team After His Passing: “He Was in Good Spirits”

The family and team of former world champion Ricky Hatton have released their first official statement following his death.

“We are all devastated by the events of recent days.

As far as we know, despite his well-known struggles, Richard was in good spirits. He was inspired by the future. His bag was packed — he was due to fly to Dubai to promote his comeback fight and had planned a celebration in Dubai, centered around his beloved girls, Millie and Fearne. He was excited that they would see him fight live for the first time. Richard was a caring grandfather who loved spending time with Campbell and Lila. He also planned to spend more time in Tenerife.

Richard had been in touch with his family and team in the days and weeks leading up to the weekend. On Friday evening, he had dinner with his girls, and Richard was not alone — not in life, and not in his final days.

We are all shocked by the events that unfolded this weekend. Richard was found by his friend and longtime manager Paul Speak, whom we are supporting at this time, along with Richard’s parents Ray and Carol, his children, and his extended family.

The outpouring of grief and love from across the country and the world shows just how much Richard was loved. In time, this will become a source of comfort and pride for us. For now, we would like a period of private mourning. Our priority is ensuring the wellbeing and support of Richard’s children and grandchildren.

Details of the memorial service will likely be shared in due course, but at this time we would be grateful if the family’s privacy and Richard’s memory could be respected,” the statement reads.

On September 14, Hatton was found dead at his home in Greater Manchester. Police stated that the death is not being treated as suspicious.
