Gervonta’s Next Opponent Could Be a Current Champion

According to insider Dan Rafael, the next fight for WBA lightweight champion (up to 61.2 kg) Gervonta Davis (30-0, 28 KOs) will not take place on November 2 as previously reported.

"Despite reports from some sources that Gervonta Davis will fight next on November 2, that will not happen. If he does fight this year, PBC is considering November 23 or December 14," Rafael wrote.

Regarding Davis' next opponent, American fighter José Valenzuela (14-2, 9 KOs) has been frequently mentioned. In August, Valenzuela captured the WBA super lightweight title (up to 63.5 kg) from Isaac Cruz (26-3-1, 18 KOs). Valenzuela's trainer, Robert Garcia, commented on the potential matchup.

"We’ve heard about it from various sources, and people have reached out to us, but Valenzuela doesn’t plan to fight again this year. He’s enjoying his victory and his time as a world champion, after spending over four months in training camp. So, he needs a break. I think if this fight happens, it will be in February or March. We’d be happy to make it happen," Garcia told K.O. Artist Sports.

Honduran trainer Ricky Funez shared information about Davis' next opponent, hinting that it could be one of Robert Garcia’s fighters.

"I know who it is, but it’s still a secret, and it will be announced soon. The fight will happen in November, and in my opinion, it will be in Las Vegas. The opponent will be one of Robert Garcia’s fighters," Funez told Pro Boxing Fans.

Former Gervonta opponent, Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs), also believes Valenzuela will be Davis' next challenger. On Twitter, Ryan called out WBO super lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez (21-1, 13 KOs). When another user asked why he wasn’t considering José Valenzuela as an opponent, Ryan responded, "Valenzuela will fight Gervonta."

Gervonta Davis last fought in June, defeating Frank Martin (18-1, 12 KOs) and handing his fellow American his first career loss by KO in the 8th round.
