WBO Interim Light Heavyweight Champion Callum Smith believes a potential fight against WBC titleholder David Benavidez remains a strong possibility.
“The fight with Benavidez is one I’ve always wanted — I’ve said that openly. It seems like we were both world champions at Super Middleweight at the same time, and I always thought that fight would happen.
We were both too big for that division, so I figured we’d eventually meet at Light Heavyweight — and here we are. He’s captured the WBC title, but I’m still in a great position. I’m the WBO Interim Champion, and I think the fight will happen. If I win my next one, I believe a bout with Benavidez will still be on the table,” Smith said.
Benavidez (30-0, 24 KOs) is set to face Britain’s Anthony Yarde on November 22 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Smith (31-2, 22 KOs) is expected to next meet David Morrell, whom Benavidez previously defeated by decision.
