Teddy Atlas on Usyk: “Get the Most Out of It, Then Walk Away”

Teddy Atlas / Frank Franklin II, AP

Renowned American trainer Teddy Atlas shared his thoughts on the possibility of Oleksandr Usyk, the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, potentially ending his career.

“He’s not showing any weaknesses. He takes great care of himself. As far as we know, he doesn’t have any bad habits that could affect his physical condition. So there’s no reason to stop doing what you do better than anyone else, if you have that kind of gift.”

Atlas believes Usyk should continue — but finish on his own terms:

“Do it and fulfill that great gift completely — take it to its natural conclusion. Get the most out of it, and then walk away — without abusing it, without staying too long, without giving in to greed.”

In July, Oleksandr Usyk (24-0, 15 KO) defeated Daniel Dubois by fifth-round knockout in their rematch, becoming the three-time undisputed world champion.
