Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) is making a return to Eddy Reynoso, the longtime trainer of Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.
Garcia previously trained under Reynoso until 2022, a period that saw him claim a victory over Luke Campbell. However, he later switched trainers, working with Joe Goossen and Derrick James, though these changes did not yield the expected results. In April 2023, Garcia suffered his first professional loss to Gervonta Davis, and later faced a one-year suspension due to a failed doping test.
Now, Garcia has returned to San Diego and rejoined Reynoso's elite training camp. His father, Henry Garcia, explained that this decision was aimed at restoring the right environment for Ryan’s career.
“There’s something new—a new trainer. Yes, we’re back in San Diego, and that’s true. It’s hard not to get along with Eddy Reynoso because we share the same roots. We’ve known each other for a long time. Canelo and Ryan have settled their differences. Everything is back to how it was, and we’re in a good place.
"We have nothing against Derrick James—he’s a great coach. But last year in Texas, things weren’t as positive as they are here. Why stay in an environment full of negativity when you can change the situation? Ryan feels safer here in Southern California.
"He has his family here, people who understand and support him. I’m in camp with him right now. We’re close to peak shape, but during intense training, it’s crucial not to burn out. We have to go through all the phases of preparation smoothly.”
Along with Garcia, Reynoso has also recently welcomed WBO super lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez and super middleweight contender Jaime Munguia into his camp.
