The father and trainer of three-division world champion Devin Haney, Bill Haney, explained why he is against his son fighting British boxer Conor Benn.
“Why are you even talking about Conor Benn? What has Conor Benn done at Welterweight that would impress us? He hasn’t fought at that weight in three years. So what would that do for us?
Let me ask you this. What weight did Conor Benn have his last fight at? Middleweight. Now you want to tell me we’re not going to give all these guys a shot? Those champions at Middleweight or Junior Middleweight? You’ve got Virgil, you’ve got Ennis, you’ve got Janibek, you’ve got all these guys.
Come on, buddy. It has to make sense. Sure, he comes from a family with a big legacy, right? But when does he become a real champion? We’ve done it three times. Our work speaks for itself. When will his work speak for him?” said Bill Haney.
Current WBO Welterweight champion Devin Haney also spoke about the Brit as a potential opponent:
“Benn is Eddie’s little puppet. Eddie is his master. He does what Eddie wants. Conor Benn hasn’t even come close to what I’ve achieved… and I’m younger than Conor Benn.
He hasn’t done anything in boxing. His biggest win is over a drained guy, and he had to do a rematch with him to get the win.
That’s the biggest win of his career. I love Chris Eubank, but he was never even a world champion,” said Devin.
In his previous fight, Haney defeated Brian Norman by decision. Benn beat Chris Eubank in a rematch and said he is ready to come down from the Middleweight division.
