British boxer Conor Benn has taken the No. 1 spot in the updated WBC Welterweight rankings. This became known at the 63rd WBC Congress taking place in Thailand.
As a result, Benn could position himself for a shot at the winner of Mario Barrios vs Ryan Garcia. The No. 1 ranking does not automatically guarantee mandatory-challenger status, but the leader is considered the top candidate.
In his previous fight, Conor Benn (24-1, 14 KO) competed at Middleweight, where he got revenge in his rematch with Chris Eubank Jr..
Ryan Garcia (24-2, 20 KO) lost his last fight to Rolando Romero in a bout for the WBA title. However, he is set to face WBC champion Mario Barrios (29-2-2, 18 KO) next — the fight is scheduled for February 21.
Garcia has also said he’s willing to fight Benn:
“I’m 2-0 against Mr. Eddie Hearn. I’d love to make it 3-0 and go to the UK — that’s always been my dream. Let’s go,” Ryan wrote on Twitter.
