Chávez Jr. Family Issues Statement on Boxer’s Arrest

The family of former world champion Julio César Chávez Jr. has commented on the Mexican fighter’s arrest.

Chávez Jr. was detained by U.S. Homeland Security. An expedited-deportation case has been opened, and, according to a DHS statement, an active arrest warrant in Mexico accuses Chávez of involvement in organised crime and trafficking of firearms, ammunition and explosives. He is also alleged to have links to the Sinaloa Cartel, designated a foreign terrorist organisation.

Our family is deeply saddened by the current situation. In these difficult times we confirm our complete and unconditional support for Julio.

We fully believe in his innocence and humanity, as well as in the justice systems of both Mexico and the United States. We hope this matter will be clarified in accordance with law and truth.

Julio is first and foremost a son, father and human being who has faced many challenges in his personal and professional life. As a family we ask for due process and for people to avoid premature judgments that violate his dignity and that of those around him.

We are grateful for the media attention, but we ask for understanding and respect for our decision to make no further statements. We firmly believe the competent authorities should carry out their work without outside pressure or speculation.

We pray for a swift resolution in Julio’s favour and once again call for discretion, respect and objectivity,” the statement reads.

Today’s accusations are outrageous—just another loud headline meant to frighten the public,” added Chávez’s attorney, Michael Goldstein.
