    Detailed Fight Review

Styles and Techniques of the Opponents

  • The fight between Gervonta and Lamont is a purely American showdown. Both are bright representatives of the American school of boxing—fast, with sharp, punishing punches.

Roach is a versatile fighter in the ring. He skillfully combines his attacks, works well at all distances, but is most effective at mid and close range. Lamont is quite adept at body attacks, consistently targeting his opponent’s midsection and attacking from all distances and angles.

Gervonta, too, embodies the American boxing style, but with a key difference—efficiency. Davis is often seen as a puncher, but his skill set extends beyond knockouts. Having raw power isn’t enough—you have to know how to land your shots effectively, and the champion is a master at it. Davis possesses speed, seamlessly attacks both the body and head, and throws sharp combinations rather than relying on a single punch.

Moreover, Gervonta is a southpaw, which adds another layer of difficulty for his opponents—and is likely to pose a challenge for Roach.

  • Age and Experience Difference

  • The fighters are almost the same age—Gervonta is 30, Roach is 29. However, Davis has faced significantly tougher opposition.

First, Gervonta has a list of top-tier, or near-elite, opponents whom he has defeated. Second, Davis is a fighter who not only competes but also sells fights, arenas, and pay-per-view broadcasts. Being under pressure is second nature to him.

Roach holds a world title and has notable wins over Jamel Herring and Hector Luis Garcia. However, the level of pressure he’ll face this time is on a completely different scale than anything he has previously experienced.

  • Punch Statistics in Recent Fights

  • Lamont is a much busier fighter in terms of punch output. In his recent bouts, Roach has thrown an average of about 470 punches per fight with an accuracy rate of 20%. Notably, nearly half of these punches are power shots, with a higher accuracy—around 26%.

Gervonta, in contrast, throws almost half as many punches but is far more efficient. For instance, his average accuracy in recent fights is 35%, with jab accuracy at 19% (compared to Roach’s 13%) and power punch accuracy at a staggering 45% versus Roach’s 26%.

  • Fighting Activity

  • Here, too, Davis has the edge—despite not being the most active fighter. He fought twice in 2023 and once in 2024.

Roach, on the other hand, has not fought more than once a year since 2021.

  • Punching Power

  • Only a select few in modern boxing can rival Gervonta’s punching power—and they are usually much heavier fighters.

Roach has just a 40% knockout rate. While he excels at combinations, works the body well, and throws in high volume, he lacks true knockout power—especially compared to his opponent.

  • Ability to Absorb Hits

  • Two key points stand out here. First, both fighters have good chins and solid defensive skills. Gervonta and Lamont are both slick defenders, adept at slipping punches, blocking, and using head movement effectively.

Second, Roach has never been hit with the kind of power that Davis possesses. None of Lamont’s past opponents have carried the level of firepower that Gervonta brings. And make no mistake—Davis will land a few of those bombs.

  • Fight Venue

  • This will be Gervonta’s fourth fight in Brooklyn. The previous three all ended in knockouts—Jose Pedraza, Jesús Cuellar, and Rolando Romero were all stopped.

For Roach, this will be his second bout in Brooklyn. His last fight there was back in 2014, when he outpointed Alexander Charneco-Vega in a four-round contest. That was only Lamont’s fifth professional fight.

  • Psychology and Recent Successes

  • This is a battle between two American champions, one of the marquee fights of March. Both men have been winning for a long time. Gervonta has been victorious for so long that his last loss came in the amateurs. Roach last tasted defeat in 2019, dropping a decision to Jamel Herring.

The two also share a bit of history—they fought as amateurs. In 2011, Davis outboxed Roach via decision, but that wasn’t their only encounter. In an interview, Gervonta was asked about a fight in which he supposedly lost to Lamont.

“No, no, he didn’t beat me. That doesn’t make sense now,” Davis said with a smile.

The most important factor in this upcoming fight will be whether Lamont can handle the pressure—and whether he has the technique and skill to make Davis hesitate, force mistakes, and avoid getting hit with power shots.

Stylistically, Roach appears to be the kind of opponent who can give Gervonta an exciting fight—but with an expected outcome. Lamont is a master at body punching, having knocked down multiple opponents with vicious shots to the midsection. He’s also a fairly large fighter, despite holding a title in a division lighter than Davis. The ingredients for a great fight are there—but are they enough for victory?

After all, when has size ever been a problem for Davis? The American has stated he actually prefers fighting taller opponents with a reach advantage. On top of that, Gervonta is razor-sharp, brutally precise, and, judging by his training camp, in peak condition. A champion like that is a terrifying force for anyone.
