WBC Grand Prix Rule Changes: More Judges, Heavier Gloves

WBC

The World Boxing Council (WBC) has announced several rule updates ahead of the Grand Prix semifinals.

“The WBC is introducing new innovations — five judges in the semifinals — to ensure maximum fairness,” the organization stated.

Below is the full list of adjustments implemented within the tournament as part of WBC’s effort to modernize boxing:

– Five judges: more perspectives on the action in the ring mean greater accuracy.

– Open scoring: judges’ score totals will be announced after the 2nd and 4th rounds, allowing fighters and their teams to adjust their strategy.

– No draws: every bout must have a winner — ensured by a special scoring system applied in case of a tie.

– Instant replay: supervisors can review and correct controversial moments in real time.

– Enhanced scoring criteria: judges will now include a qualitative (subjective) assessment for each round.

– 30-second signal: a sound cue at the final 30 seconds of each round encourages more active finishes.

– 12-ounce gloves for heavyweights: a new size designed for improved protection and comfort for larger fighters.

All WBC Grand Prix semifinals will take place on October 19 in Riyadh.
