Vergil Ortiz to return in October — De La Hoya

Golden Boy Promotions founder and CEO Oscar De La Hoya has shared details about the next fight for interim WBC Super Welterweight champion Vergil Ortiz.

According to the promoter, the American fighter will return to the ring in October against an opponent ranked in the top five of the division.

“He’s ready for anyone. Vergil Ortiz is Golden Boy’s next star. We believe in him 1,000 percent. We plan to bring him back in October in a fight against someone from the top five rankings. He’ll be back soon,” De La Hoya told DAZN.

Earlier, promoter Eddie Hearn discussed a potential bout between Ortiz and Jaron Ennis, which could take place in January in Las Vegas, USA, as part of a joint boxing event between Matchroom Boxing and Golden Boy Promotions. De La Hoya has also stated that the Ennis–Ortiz fight is inevitable.

Vergil Ortiz (23-0, 21 KOs) last fought in February, defeating Israil Madrimov by unanimous decision.
