In the early hours of September 29, a video surfaced showing Omaha police officers stopping a car carrying undisputed champion Terence Crawford after his championship parade — and pointing guns at him and his companions.
The incident came after a large-scale celebration of Crawford’s historic victory over Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, which made him the first undisputed champion in three weight divisions in the four-belt era.
How the Events Unfolded
According to official information, at around 1:30 a.m. patrol officers noticed a car driving in violation of traffic rules in downtown Omaha, near the intersection of North 12th Street and Capitol Avenue. The vehicle was pulled over on Cass Street.
During a conversation with the driver, an officer noticed a firearm on the driver’s side floor. For safety reasons, all four passengers were ordered out of the car at gunpoint. After checking documents, the driver was identified as Crawford. He was issued a citation for reckless driving.
It was soon revealed that the weapon belonged to Crawford’s security guard and was legally owned. All passengers had the right to carry firearms. At Crawford’s request, the police chief and a lieutenant arrived at the scene.
Authorities’ Reaction
Omaha Mayor John Ewing, in his statement, acknowledged the seriousness of the incident and said he personally spoke with Crawford. He stressed the importance of transparency and maintaining trust between the community and law enforcement.
“I learned that Omaha police stopped Terence Crawford during a traffic stop in the downtown area early in the morning. After hearing about this, I personally spoke with Crawford. I recognize the seriousness of the situation and understand how important trust between law enforcement and our community is. This demonstrates the need for continued work on building such relationships,” Ewing said.
Police Chief Todd Schmaderer authorized an internal investigation. He promised that it would be “full and thorough,” and that the findings would be made public.

“My heart sank when I learned how such a great day had ended — a celebration of a world boxing champion from our city. We had a wonderful parade and an outstanding event at Heartland of America Park. The birthday party at Steelhouse, attended by myself and my team, was a true expression of joy and pride. Omaha should remember this day as a positive one, even as we seek answers as to why it ended this way. At the same time, we must ensure that every resident, no matter who they are, feels safe and respected,” Schmaderer said.
