‘Never Give Up’: De La Hoya on Sandoval’s Triumph in Japan

Founder and head of Golden Boy Promotions Oscar De La Hoya weighed in on the victory of his fighter, WBA and WBC flyweight champion Ricardo Sandoval, over Kenshiro Teraji.

“A perfect example of why you should never give up. Ricardo Sandoval went all the way to Japan, beat a two-division world champion, and came home with two belts.

These are the moments we chase when we match our boxers tough. We throw them into genuinely hard fights so they’re ready for any challenge—whether that means going abroad or facing King Kong in their own backyard.

There’s a method to the madness. We know how this game works. Ricardo’s risk paid off, and we’re endlessly proud of him.

Both I, Golden Boy president Eric Gomez, and our matchmakers never doubted that Ricardo was ready. All he needed was the chance, and he seized it. Everything came together perfectly.

Mr. Honda still holds an option on him, and we’ll be working with them on the next fight. It could be a Teraji rematch or a unification bout with another champion—we’re on board,” De La Hoya said.

On 30 July, Ricardo Sandoval (27-2, 18 KOs) defeated Kenshiro Teraji (25-2, 16 KOs) by split decision to claim the WBA and WBC flyweight titles.
