Insider Names Two Possible Scenarios for Resendiz vs. Munguia

Jaime Munguia, Jose Armando Resendiz

ESPN insider Salvador Rodriguez has revealed potential timelines for the clash between the reigning WBA super middleweight champion Jose Armando Resendiz and Mexican star Jaime Munguia.

According to Rodriguez, the negotiations currently point to two possible windows:

– March 2026: The fight would serve as the main event of its own card.

– May 2026: The bout would take place on the undercard of the massive (though not yet officially confirmed) showdown between Gilberto "Zurdo" Ramirez and David Benavidez.

Munguia's Road to Return

Jaime Munguia (45-2, 35 KOs) last fought in May 2025, where he successfully avenged his previous career-first loss by defeating Bruno Surace in a rematch. However, his return was delayed by a doping scandal when metabolites of exogenous testosterone were found in his system. Munguia was eventually fully exonerated in October 2025 after proving the test result was caused by a legal, non-banned substance (pregnenolone) found in contaminated supplements.

Resendiz's Championship Status

Jose Armando Resendiz (16-2, 11 KOs) reached the top of the division through a series of significant shifts. He secured a massive upset victory over Caleb Plant in May 2025 to win the interim title. Following Terence Crawford's retirement in late 2025, Crawford relinquished his WBA belts. Resendiz was officially elevated to full WBA world champion on January 1, 2026.

Munguia recently declined a fight against Osleys Iglesias for the vacant IBF title, signaling that his sights are firmly set on Resendiz and the WBA crown.
