Organization of the clash for the interim WBO light heavyweight title has faced new hurdles. Despite earlier indications that an agreement was close, the camps of David Morrell and Callum Smith failed to finalize the contract, prompting the sanctioning body to step in.
WBO President Gustavo Olivieri has officially announced that the promotional rights for the bout between the Cuban David Morrell and the Briton Callum Smith will be determined through a purse bid.
The decision stems from the inability of the parties to agree on the terms of the fight, despite an extended negotiation process. The move to a purse bid was initiated by the Cuban boxer’s team.
“The WBO confirmed receipt of a written request from Warriors Boxing on behalf of David Morrell, requesting the commencement of the purse bid procedure for the interim light heavyweight title fight against Callum Smith. The reason cited is that specific dates for the bout have yet to be determined,” Olivieri stated.
Previously, the purse bid had been postponed as both sides reported they were on the verge of a deal. However, a final consensus remained elusive.
Callum Smith (31-2, 22 KOs) last competed in February 2025, defeating fellow Briton Joshua Buatsi via unanimous decision. That victory earned him the interim WBO light heavyweight belt.
David Morrell (12-1, 9 KOs) secured his position by defeating Imam Khataev via a close split decision in July 2025.
