Matías Doping Case: What It Could Mean and How the WBC Responded

Subriel Matias / The Ring Magazine

WBC Junior Welterweight champion Subriel Matías has tested positive for a banned substance.

According to sources, the 33-year-old Puerto Rican’s sample contained ostarine — the same substance found in Ryan Garcia a year and a half ago, which led to his fight with Devin Haney being ruled a no-contest and Garcia receiving a one-year suspension.

Matías now has 10 days to request analysis of his B-sample.

WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman confirmed the accuracy of the report:

“The WBC has received confirmation from VADA of a positive test result for WBC Junior Welterweight champion Subriel Matías.

The WBC has initiated an investigation process in accordance with the Clean Boxing Program protocol.

I have spoken with our champion Subriel and his promoter Mr. Orengo — they expressed full willingness to cooperate throughout the entire process.

At this time, the WBC will not provide further comment,” Sulaiman wrote.

Matías had been scheduled to face WBC Silver champion Dalton Smith on January 10. A replacement is now being sought. According to insider Mike Coppinger, if Matías is stripped of the title, Smith’s new opponent could be Alberto Puello.

Puello was the previous holder of that belt.

Last summer, he lost to Matías by majority decision and immediately stated his intention to use the rematch clause. However, the WBC instead sanctioned Matías vs. Smith.
