Lomachenko on Why He Retired: “It All Comes Down to This”

Former three-division world champion Vasyl Lomachenko named the key reason behind his decision to retire from professional boxing.

— How difficult was it to make the decision to retire? Did you think about it for a long time?

— It wasn’t difficult, because I lost my motivation. My motivation was to become the undisputed world champion, and then I lost to Haney. That was my last chance. So after that, I won one more belt and finished with boxing.

— So this isn’t about injuries or anything like that? The reason is motivation?

— No. The reason is only motivation. Only motivation.

Lomachenko last fought in spring 2024, when he stopped George Kambosos to become world champion again. In the summer of 2025, Vasyl officially announced his retirement.
