Eddie Hearn on Ennis vs. Ortiz: "We Are Right on the Edge, Announcement Possible in Late March"

Matchroom Boxing Chairman Eddie Hearn provided an update on the status of organizing the showdown between his client, WBA Interim junior middleweight champion Jaron Ennis, and WBC Interim titleholder Vergil Ortiz.

“I think we are right on the edge of making that fight. Obviously, a lot of things have happened recently that made it a little bit more difficult.

Josh Kelly, by the way, has a contract to fight Ennis, so that would be easy to make. Also, this weekend Xander Zayas and Abass Baraou have a unification fight – the winner is also a potential opponent. But we want the fight with Vergil Ortiz.

I believe that is the best fight that can be made in American boxing. March 28 is the date we are targeting for the announcement of Boots' next fight. If it pushes a little bit into April and it’s the right fight for Boots – no problem. Boots is ready,” Hearn said.

Vergil Ortiz (23-0, 21 KOs) and Jaron Ennis (35-0, 31 KOs) both won their previous bouts early – Ortiz in the 2nd round and Ennis in the 1st. Subsequently, they both agreed to the matchup.
