Did Dubois Quit in the Rematch? Usyk’s Emergency Trainer Doesn’t Think So

Emergency coach to undisputed heavyweight king Oleksandr Usyk, James Ali Bashir—who stepped in for the champion’s camp—refused to label Daniel Dubois a quitter after their second meeting.

“As a boxing trainer I never want to say a fighter quit. I avoid that word, because I’m not in the ring, I’m not taking those punches. We can’t know exactly what shape he was in at that moment.

He took a shot on the chin—often in those situations the body reacts instinctively to protect itself.

So it’s hard to say what he felt or thought. He had a chance to rise, but you could see he was disoriented. I won’t presume to claim he quit. I’ll never say that, because I wasn’t in his place feeling those blows,” Bashir said.

In their second encounter Usyk (24‑0, 15 KOs) knocked out Dubois (22‑3, 21 KOs) in round five—four rounds quicker than in their first fight.
