Former undisputed super middleweight world champion Saúl Álvarez has decided to skip a Cinco de Mayo fight and will return to the ring in September, boxing journalist Salvador Rodríguez reports, citing the Mexican’s trainer Eddy Reynoso.

Canelo usually fights twice a year. Those dates are traditionally tied to Mexican holidays — Cinco de Mayo (May 5) and Mexico’s Independence Day (September 16). In 2026, Álvarez will skip the May fight.

Instead, Canelo (63-3-2, 39 KOs) is targeting a rematch with the WBA, WBO and IBF super middleweight titleholder Terence Crawford in September 2026. Álvarez lost to him by unanimous decision on September 13 in Las Vegas, USA, giving up his undisputed status in the division.
