Will Itauma beat Usyk? Trainer responds

Ben Davison, trainer of British prospect Moses Itauma, shared his thoughts on a possible fight between his fighter and undisputed heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk.

– Do you think Itauma would accept that challenge (a fight with Usyk) if he gets past Dillian Whyte?

– He would accept a fight with Oleksandr. That’s certainly not something we’d say “no” to — let’s put it that way.

– Do you see enough to believe Moses would come out on top against Usyk?

– He has every tool to do it. As I’ve said before, he’s not the type who needs to “catch someone at the right moment.” He has the potential to beat anyone in the world.

– When you have that kind of talent — how challenging is it to manage expectations?

– Manage expectations? Yes, to help him with that. He takes it all calmly. He’s very balanced, composed, and mature. That’s one of the reasons he’s able to do what he’s doing at his age.

Because most people at 20 could get caught up in the hype and the things said about them, but he lets it all pass by and focuses on the right things. Very mature, clear-thinking — and that’s exactly why he can perform at this level at such a young age.

Moses Itauma (12-0, 10 KOs) will face Dillian Whyte on August 16 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

On July 19, Oleksandr Usyk (24-0, 15 KOs) knocked out Daniel Dubois in the fifth round to become undisputed champion for the third time in his career.
