Golden Boy Promotions president Eric Gomez has confirmed that negotiations are underway for a clash between WBC light heavyweight champion David Benavidez and WBA/WBO cruiserweight champion Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez.
“We’re working on it. Right now we’re negotiating a major fight in 2026 between Zurdo and Benavidez.
Of course, everything depends on whether they win their next fights. Zurdo still has an undisputed bout to get through against Opetaia at cruiserweight, and Benavidez has to beat Anthony Yarde at light heavyweight. But if both move forward — the fight happens.
Both sides are very interested. David is really excited — he keeps telling me: ‘Man, I want to fight Zurdo. It’s going to be a massive Mexican showdown.’ We’ve had very productive conversations with Samson Lewkowicz, Zurdo’s promoter. Everything is lining up.
This is about bringing weight classes together, staging a high-stakes fight between two predators. It could be a huge event for boxing. Benavidez loves the idea. The fight is already on the table — and it’s going to be an all-out war,” said Gomez.
David Benavidez (30-0, 24 KOs) is scheduled to face Anthony Yarde on November 22. Gilberto Ramirez (48-1, 30 KOs) is currently recovering from injury.
