Undisputed super middleweight champion Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez has commented on Jaime Munguia’s failed doping test.
“We believe in Jaime Munguia, who will soon clear everything up. And I want to make one thing clear: Eddy Reynoso doesn’t give him any supplements. Eddy is entirely focused on his training,” said Canelo.
To recall, on May 3, Munguia defeated Bruno Surace in their rematch by unanimous decision. However, shortly after the bout, his VADA A-sample tested positive for exogenous testosterone metabolites. Munguia has 10 days to request testing of the B-sample.
If the B-sample also returns positive, Munguia could face a boxing suspension, and the result of the fight may be overturned to a No Contest.
The rematch with Surace marked the beginning of Munguia’s collaboration with Eddy Reynoso, who is also Canelo’s longtime trainer.
Other fighters in Reynoso’s camp — Julio César Martínez, Oscar Valdez, and Ryan Garcia — have previously returned positive doping tests. In 2018, Canelo himself served a six-month suspension for a failed test.
