5 Things to Know About the Norman vs Sasaki Showdown

On June 19, a world title bout in the Welterweight division (66.7 kg) will take place in Japan. American champion Brian Norman will defend his WBO belt against Japan’s own Jin Sasaki.

Earlier, we broke down where you can watch the fight, which could be one of the best of 2025. Now, here’s why fans should expect a top-tier clash.

– Norman and Sasaki are both high-octane, aggressive fighters.

Both men love to fight on the front foot — with Sasaki being especially known for relentless pressure.

The champion is arguably the more well-rounded of the two but also enjoys pinning opponents down and working in combinations.

If you were designing a dream fight for action fans, Norman vs Sasaki would be on the shortlist.

– There’s no real physical advantage on either side.

Sasaki is taller by just 1 cm, but Norman has a 7 cm reach advantage. Even at the weigh-in, they both hit exactly 66.6 kg.

With neither man having overwhelming physical tools, we’re unlikely to see any tactical outliers. Norman may box off the back foot a bit more than usual, but both fighters are expected to engage in open exchanges rather than long setups.

– Both carry fight-ending power.

Sasaki has knocked out 4 of his last 5 opponents, and most recently went 12 full rounds in a dominant performance against Shoki Sakai.

Norman, meanwhile, is riding a two-fight KO streak — and both Santillán and Cuevas not only got stopped but walked away with badly swollen faces.

– It’s Norman’s first fight in Japan – but not his first outside the U.S.

Early in his career, Brian boxed several times in Mexico, where he almost always won. Only one bout was declared a no-contest.

– It’s a significant bout in the context of the division.

Unified champion Jaron Ennis is rumored to be moving up in weight, which could leave the IBF and WBA titles vacant. Meanwhile, Manny Pacquiao is set to face Mario Barrios for the WBC belt, and a bout against the Filipino legend would be a massive payday for any champion — should Pacquiao capture the title.

Of course, neither Norman nor Sasaki is looking past this fight — the challenge in front of them is real. But the possibility of star-making unification bouts looms in the background.
